Zero turn lawn mowers have revolutionized the lawn industry, making it faster and easier to mow.
If you’re like many home and business owners, you want to know which mower is best for you. This guide will answer your questions.
If you’ve ever used a lawn tractor, a traditional gas lawn mower, or an old fashion reel mower, then you know that they are time-consuming to use and a hassle to maneuver.
With traditional riding lawn mowers, you have to make a three-point turn just like you would in a car. With push mowers, you have to, well, push.
But zero turn mowers (ZTRs) can turn on a dime. They tackle areas between trees and around bushes with ease. Many say that ZTRs cut their mow-time in half. For homeowners, this means more time to spend with friends, family, and hobbies. For business owners, this means more lawns and more profit. Of course, robotic lawn mowers can cut mowing time by probably 99%, but they certainly won’t handle the job the way a power or ride-on mower will.
There’s no wonder why so many people are switching to ZTRs. They are the best riding lawn mowers on the market.
There are so many options to choose from. This article will equip you with the information you need to decide on the best zero turn mower. Below you will find the top things you should consider as you look for a ZTR.
Selection Of The Best Zero Turn Mowers
Here are the best zero turn mowers for most people according to Outlinist:
Ariens Zoom 42IN 19HP Zero Turn Lawn Mower
When you have a lot of grass to mow in a short period of time, a riding mower is the way to go. And, one with a zero turn radius is even better.
Here’s one of the best commercial zero turn mowers of this year.
Price, handling, comfort, and cutting width are some of the most important qualities of any zero turn mower. Most mowers will excel in some aspects and fail in others.
If you’re looking to take all of these things into consideration while also making comparisons to other mowers, you’re in the right place.

Information
At just around 440 pounds, it’s also extremely lightweight, which will allow you to deal with bumps and hills a little easier than heavier mowers.
Overall, it’s difficult to not consider this one of the best zero turn mowers for the money. Generally, a mower of this caliber could wind up costing you quite a bit, but with a very competitive price point, this model gives you quite a bit.
Its size will allow you to get in and out of tight spaces with ease, which is one of the primary reasons you need a ZTM to begin with. If you have gates you need to get through while mowing, this just might be your best bet.
Of course, the small size also means that you get a smaller cutting width. At just 42 inches, this won’t quite cover as much ground as many other mowers of its caliber. If you don’t mind taking a little extra time on your lawn, however, that’s not a problem.

When breaking down the best zero turn mower list, this one provides us with plenty of positives and only a few negatives. While this is considered a top 10 commercial lawn mower, it’s going to be better equipped for certain jobs rather than others.
Ariens has certainly provided some great quality for the price, and they should be praised for that. It’s no wonder they’ve made a name for themselves as one of the best zero turn mower brands.
Pros
If you work on both smaller and medium-sized lawns, this might be the perfect mower for you, as it’s versatile enough to handle either with ease.
Because this is one of the top commercial zero turn mowers, there are plenty of positives about it, so we’ll just list a few of them. Here are some of the most important aspects and features of this mower.
- Extremely lightweight and maneuverable: No one wants to try and maneuver a heavy, clunky mower. Thankfully, you don’t have to. At just over 440 pounds, this is one of the lightest weight riding mowers you’ll ever find, and it’s capable of maneuvering tight spaces while also covering plenty of ground.
- A perfectly compact design: Along with its light weight, this mower is also very compact. This means that you’ll never have any problem getting through fenced areas. For those who need to be able to go through small gates, you shouldn’t ever have any problems with this model.
- Kholer 6000 series engine: On any riding mower, you need a quality engine that you know you can depend on. With the Kholer 6000 series engine included with this model, you’re getting just that. This is a trusted name when it comes to mower engines, which is definitely a plus.
- An extra level of cut adjustment: You can adjust the height of your cut to anywhere from 1.5 inches to 4.5 inches. Most mowers will only go as high as 4. While that extra half inch might not seem like a huge deal, it does make a difference in certain situations. Simply having the added adjustability is worth mentioning.
- Perfect for medium-sized jobs: Its size might limit you on really large jobs, but when it comes to medium-sized lawns, this mower provides everything you need and so much more. If you work on both smaller and medium-sized lawns, this might be the perfect mower for you, as it’s versatile enough to handle either with ease.
- A price that’s difficult to beat: Unless you’re looking at doing some large-scale commercial jobs, there are few mowers on the market that will give you so much value. If you want to lower your investment cost without sacrificing quality, this is a good option.
Cons
Before you go out and buy this, you also need to consider what you need and whether or not it can fully deliver. Here are a few cons to consider before you spend the money on this mower.
- Small design can increase mowing time: While the compact design of this mower can be a plus in many ways, it can also be a negative. Because it only covers 42 inches, it might take a little longer to get the job done. Most mowers of its type will cover at least 48, so you’re not going to cover as much ground quite as quickly.
- Not the most powerful engine: The lightweight design is great, but it also means that you’re using a slightly smaller engine with less power than other models. With only 19 horsepower, there is a lack of overall power that could be bothersome.
- Can’t mulch without purchasing a separate mulch kit: You’ll have to buy a mulch kit separately if you want to mulch with this mower. The mulch kit also isn’t the easiest thing in the world to install, so consider this fact before you buy the mower or the kit.

Pros
The Mustang has a number of different features that allow the operator of the mower to stay as safe as possible while mowing.
This heavy duty zero turn mowing star puts some commercial zero turn mowers to shame. Here are a few of the positives that you should consider when you are looking to purchase this particular model from Troy-Bilt.

- Gets the job done fast: This has a lot of horsepower for a lawn mower, and with its generous 46 inch deck and above average speed, you can get your lawn jobs completed much more quickly than with other mowers that are available for purchase within this category.
- Built to keep the operator safe: From the comfortable seating, to the lap bars, right down to the parking brake safety options, the Mustang has a number of different features that allow the operator of the mower to stay as safe as possible while mowing.
- More choices for cutting height: Eight height settings give better than average flexibility to adjust the cut for the season, the type of grass and the use. - Compatible FastAttach accessories to upgrade your experience: If you need to utilize this particular mower for some heavy duty jobs, there are several FastAttach accessories that are compatible with the device, making it simple for you to hook them on and get the job done right.
Cons
While Troy-Bilt is one of the best zero turn mower brands, that doesn’t mean that this model doesn’t have its imperfections. Keep these cons in mind when you are thinking about buying this particular mower.
- Some problems in regards to slipping: If the ground is even slightly wet, the tires are not going to grip very well, possibly causing it to slip. Keep that in mind when you’re mowing so that you can compensate and stay safe while mowing.
- Cutting deck does not come level from the factory: For some reason, the cutting deck is not leveled at the factory, which means that you will have to do some leveling before your first mow. It’s easy to do and all you need to know is in the instruction manual as well.
- It may turf the yard if you turn too sharply: If you turn too suddenly while you are mowing, you may find that you accidentally turf (mat) the grass. Try to prevent yourself from doing this by taking your time and taking wider turns when you mow.

Information
This model is higher priced than some but is a great investment for anyone who needs one of the best zero turn mowers for commercial use.
The Swisher ZTR2454BS Response 24HP ZTR Mower is a commercial riding mower with zero turn functionality. It can turn a complete 360 degrees and has a low center of gravity that makes it one of the best zero turn mowers for hills.
This machine is fast. It can go approximately 8 miles per hour both forwards and backwards, so you can get the job done quick. The average riding lawn mower goes around 6 miles per hour, and those extra two miles can make a world of difference in how long it takes to accomplish large projects.
It is also powerful. The model is equipped with a hydro gear 2800 transmission and has a 24 horsepower Briggs & Stratton engine. Rear and front hitches are installed, and there is an hour meter that lets you know how much longer you can keep going before stopping to charge.

The main issue with this model is that it uses a lot of fuel. While the fuel tank is large (eight gallons), gas is still expensive. This wouldn’t be the model for anyone looking for something fuel efficient. It is also noisy and the battery life could be better.
There is a built-in cup holder, which is great for those really hot days when you need a drink close at hand. It is also easy to raise the mower deck with the foot assisted deck lift.
This model is higher priced than some but is a great investment for anyone who needs one of the best zero turn mowers for commercial use. It will cut your time considerably for large properties or projects.
Pros
When you hit those shaded spots where the grass needs a higher cut, you don’t need to stop and manually raise the deck.
This mower is fast and powerful, coming equipped with several great features like a foot assisted deck lift and an hour meter. It has unrivaled turning power and a hitch for towing. Continue reading to find out more.
- Impressive speed: This ZTM goes 8 miles per hour, which is two more than the average riding mower. This can dramatically impact the time spent on individual lawns; so much so that you’ll be looking for more clients. It can do this speed both forwards and backwards.
- Two hitches: There are both rear and front hitches equipped on this Swisher mower. This allows for maximum towing capabilities, no matter if you need to push or pull something along. This is great for people with large properties.
- Foot assisted deck lift: This feature makes it very easy to raise the mower deck. When you hit those shaded spots where the grass needs a higher cut, you don’t need to stop and manually raise the deck. Simply pause, raise the deck, and continue with the job.
- Hour meter: The hour meter lets you know how much longer you have left until the battery dies. This can help you to plan out your mowing accordingly and will help stop you from getting stuck with a dead battery.
- Powerful: This mower has a 24hp Briggs engine and has a hydro gear 2800 transmission installed. This makes for enough power to tackle even the hardest jobs, without fear of the engine stalling out or the mower breaking down.
- Unrivaled turning power: The low center of gravity of this Swisher model enhances its stability and balance which gives it an edge over other ZTMs when completing 360 degree turns. This not only helps with turning power, but also makes it great for hills.
Cons
Even the best products have a few cons, and the Swisher ZTR2454BS is no exception. Although there aren’t a lot of downsides to this ZTM, you should be aware of them before making a purchase decision.
- Uses a lot of fuel: The amount of fuel this mower burns up can end up being expensive. It does have a large fuel tank, so you don’t have to stop and fill up frequently. But for those with environmental concerns, or a low gas budget, a different model might be better.
- Noisy: If you’re a homeowner looking for a machine that runs quietly, this mower probably wouldn’t be your best bet. For commercial mowers, however, loud motors are rather a given as it tends to occur with powerful models.
- Battery dies quickly: The battery life could be better. It doesn’t die right away, but faster than would be expected. You’ll want to ensure you have a full charge before starting any project, especially large ones.

Pros
This is among the best residential zero turn mowers when it comes to operator safety.
This Husqvarna model is one of the best rated zero turn residential mowers and comes with a variety of features to make your yard work a little less strenuous. Amongst these are the LED highlights, anti-slip foot area, and air induction mowing technology.
- Easy to start: Its keyless ignition is super easy to use. Simply push a button, key in your code and it starts. The keyless feature comes along with the smart switch technology that is unique to Husqvarna. The smart switch system displays safety status, enables one touch control of headlights and more.
- Can be used in the dark: The Z246I has LED headlights which make it so you can mow in the dark, or in the fading light. This is great for jobs that run a little later than you thought, because you don’t have to finish in the morning. You can just keep going.
- Strong: This riding mower is strong enough for any job. It has a reinforced steel cutting deck that gives it extra strength and endurance. This means it is less likely to break and can also cut through taller grass than other ZTM models.
- Safe: This is among the best residential zero turn mowers when it comes to operator safety. There is an anti-slip foot area to prevent accidents and it has a rear engine guard that protects the machine from hard impacts and shields users from hot parts.
- Superior engine: You can’t get any better than a Briggs & Stratton engine. There’s a reason why this company has been around for about 100 years, and the powerful 23hp engine in the Z246I will prove it to you. With basic maintenance, the engine will perform exceptionally well for years.
- Cuts better: Compare zero turn mowers side by side and you’ll see that Husqvarna’s air induction moving technology gives this model an edge over others. It lifts the grass as it moves along, so the end result looks much better without extra work on your behalf.
Cons
The cons for this ZTM include that it’s loud, figuring out how much gas is left in the tank is truly problematic and there isn’t a tow hitch for a cart. Read on to find out more.
- It’s a very loud machine: This machine is very loud. The motor runs loud, and there are squeaks as you bump along. It is definitely not a desirable choice for someone looking for a quiet running model.
- There is no way to tell how much gas is left: Even though it has a generous 3.5 gallon tank, this is annoying because it is very easy to run out of gas when you have no idea how much is left. It can be a big hassle if you have a big property and run out of gas on the back half.
- There is no tow hitch for a cart: Many mowers come equipped with a tow hitch for a cart, but this is not one of those. While this may not be a huge deal for some, others may find this to be a deal breaker.

Pros
Husqvarna has worked to make the steering and control systems on their machines simple to understand and to use.
There are many different reasons why you will often find this particular Husqvarna mower on the best commercial lawn mower review websites. Let’s take a look at a few of the features that make the MZ61 so popular.
- Comfortable ride, even for those with back pain: The seating is very comfortable and made for the human body’s ergonomic needs, even allowing older adults and people with chronic pain to be able to mow the lawn easily and without too much pain or discomfort.
- User interface is intuitive and user friendly: No matter how much or how little experience you may have with newer mowers and their technology, Husqvarna has worked to make the steering and control systems on their machines simple to understand and to use.
- Great mower for large, flat areas of land: With a 27hp Briggs & Stratton engine powering you to speeds of up to 8.5 mph along with a 61 inch cutting width, you’ll finish the job faster than ever. Some users report that this machine reduces their mowing time by half.
- Easy to adjust to fit your needs: Whether you need to adjust the seat or the blades on the cutting deck, it’s incredibly simple to make those changes with basic tools. It makes the process of getting it ready to mow that much easier.
- Lasts longer than other similarly priced mowers on the market: When you look at residential and commercial zero turn mowers prices, you will find that the MZ61 is toward the more expensive side. But, it is one of the longest lasting mowers in its price range and is worth the investment, especially if you find one on sale.
- Collects almost anything on the ground: The air intake system provides superior lift that picks up the last little grass clipping. For additional productivity, add on the unique triple-bag collection system. This is particularly useful for properties with a lot of trees as it will bag up sticks, nuts and tons of leaves.
Cons
While the MZ61 is a great mower, there are a few things that you want to be sure that you keep an eye on. Here’s a quick look at some of the issues that may arise in regards to this particular mower.
- Has some trouble with hills: While it can take care of small hills, if you have a particularly hilly space of land, the mower may struggle a bit. This is a common issue with zero turn mowers in general, though, so it’s not surprising that it can be a problem.
- Large size may be problematic for storage purposes: If you don’t have a lot of storage space for your mower, you may need to reconsider and get a mower that takes up a little bit less space (perhaps with a smaller deck or smaller seating arrangement).
- Items may stick to the underside of the deck: Due to the layout, the middle part of the deck can be difficult to reach with the hose for cleaning. Prepping the underside of the deck with an anti-stick spray up front before your first use will make cleanups easier.

- Makes lawn work easier and faster: The time needed for mowing will be lessened by a third or more which is an obvious benefit. Whether you run a business or own private property with a lot of land, the less time out of your busy day the better.
- Air Induction Moving Technology: This feature ensures a better cut over traditional methods used on riding lawn mowers in the past. It also improves grass lift for a better end appearance, which means the grass is fluffy and fairly clip-free when you finish mowing.
- Strong and durable design: The reinforced steel cutting deck ensures strength and durability in this mower. The extra support makes the chance of breaks or dents much less likely, which offers a little extra assurance when going over tall grass.
- Automatic choke system makes it easy to start: With a manual choke system, you can waste a decent amount of time priming the engine before you ever begin mowing. Being able to press a single button instead saves both time and hassle.
- Easier clean up: The 54-inch Z254 mower has a removable pan under the deck which gives you a clear path to hose off stuck-on clippings. This feature also facilitates servicing as detaching the pan allows unimpeded access to vital parts.
- Ride with comfort: The large, vinyl seat and ergonomically designed control system makes your ride much more relaxed. It eases the possibility of back or leg pain, calluses, or pulled muscles from difficult controls with its comfortable design.
Cons
There are a few cons associated with this product, such as lawn clippings which can accumulate on the underside of the deck and the heavy topside. Continue reading to learn more about the downsides of purchasing this ZTM.
- Grass builds up on the underside of the deck: Although cleanup is a lot easier due to the detachable deck pan, this mower tends to allow lawn clippings to build up beneath the deck. This can be annoying as it then requires some elbow grease to keep it clean and performing well.
- Too top heavy for steep slopes: This model is not an appropriate choice for properties with steep slopes or hilly landscapes. Even for ZTMs, which generally have trouble with hills, the top of the Z254 is too heavy to make going uphill safe, although it is great on primarily flat landscapes.
- Battery dies quickly: The battery on this model doesn’t last as long as more expensive commercial mowers. It actually dies fairly quickly, which can turn into a big hassle. Reviews found around the web agree that the battery life could definitely be better.

Pros
The deck lift system uses springs, which makes lifting and lowering it extremely easy.
Quality is the most important thing when it comes to finding a good mower, and this one certainly has it. Here’s a list of a few things that make this mower more than worth its asking price.
- A comfortable ride: When you plan on sitting on a mower for a long time to cut a large area of grass, comfort is important, and this mower definitely provides just that. You can sit on it for hours with very little strain, which is definitely a plus for a mower of this type.
- Simple three-hour assembly: If you’ve ever used a riding mower before, you know that assembly can be one of the most frustrating things about it. This mower assembles with relative ease in three hours, which isn’t nearly as long as some other models.
- Air induction technology: You always want and even cut, and this mower comes with the advanced technology to do just that. The air induction system will draw air in from the top and bottom, which in turn improves grass lift. This assures that you’ll always get a great cut.
- Easy to lift deck: The deck lift system uses springs, which makes lifting and lowering it extremely easy. What’s more, the system can be accessed quickly and easily while sitting on the mower, so you’ll never have to get off of it in order to make an adjustment.
- Never leaves unsightly cutting marks: If you want a beautiful lawn, the last thing you want is a bunch of lines and streaks in it. Thankfully, the design of this mower will allow you to get an even cut without leaving cutting marks all over it. That’s how you get a beautiful lawn!
- Extremely durable cutting deck: The cutting deck is made out of stamped steel and reinforced by a heavy, flat-stock steel. This provides extra durability, which means you can be sure that the deck will remain durable after years of use. They definitely used high-quality materials for this deck.
Cons
With any product on the market, there are going to be some bad things about it, as well. Does the good outweigh the bad? Compare these cons with the pros and decide for yourself.
- Weight and design makes it dangerous on steep slopes: It’s recommended that you never use this mower on any hill or slope that’s steeper than 10 degrees. Doing so could lead to an accident and a serious injury. Because of this, the mower isn’t the best for certain jobs.
- Slightly lower horsepower: This model comes with a 20 horsepower engine, which is slightly lower than other models that tend to come with a 22 or higher horsepower engine. This, combined with the weight, means that it might move a little slower than some other mowers of its type.
- Might find a similar design at a slightly lower price: While this mower certainly isn’t expensive, there are other models that are similar and a little less pricey. If you’re only cutting relatively flat surfaces anyway, you might consider comparing prices with similar models and looking for a better deal.

However, this mower could be very dangerous to use on steep inclines, and there are other similar mowers with slightly more power at around the same price, or even a little bit lower. Compare and contrast and make your decision wisely.

The fact that this mower comes fully equipped with a 24HP motor may seem like an optimal selling point to draw enough attention – especially from first time buyers. However, that is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the overall value of the Poulan P54ZX.
For instance, its maneuverability factor is enhanced simply by its dual wheel configuration that allows you to independently control each individual wheel as you mow your lawn. This makes it possible to move in whichever direction you need to without any excessive movements or physical strain.
Thanks to its high-quality engine and overall design, the P54ZX is built to last for many years – outlasting the typical riding mower that may match many of its other specifications.
Pros
You will no longer need to worry about the stressful burden and time-consuming task of engaging the blade while mowing or before you even start.
With such an impressive design and performance level, it’s no surprise that the P54ZX is rated as one of the best zero turn mowers in its class. Review some of its advantages and see why so many critics and buyers have given it their seal of approval.
- A high-quality engine that combines performance with power: You cannot go wrong with a Briggs & Stratton engine for any type of lawn mower. However, when you enhance the horsepower within that high-quality engine to the 24HP found within this Poulan model, it just further enhances the overall value of this solid investment option.
- Simple clutch blade engagement for added efficiency while mowing the lawn: You will no longer need to worry about the stressful burden and time-consuming task of engaging the blade while mowing or before you even start. This model comes with a simplistic electric clutch blade engagement that relieves this burden.
- You will never be limited to 2-3 cutting positions as you use it: The P54ZX offers a total of 6 different positions that you can use when you need to adjust the height with an impressive range that drops down as low as 1.5″ and can extend up to 4″.
- 10-year cutting deck warranty: Instead of worrying about whether the 54″ reinforced cutting deck cutting deck will go out on you in the first decade, you can rest assured in knowing that it is taken care by this top-grade warranty.
- Additional 3-year warranty available to protect your investment longer: Instead of investing in a 1-year or 2-year limited warranty, you can benefit from the added protection of a 3-year limited homeowner warranty with this Poulan Pro model.
- You can trust in the first-class reputation and brand recognition of Poulan Pro: The fact that it is a Poulan Pro model is a major selling point all by itself, especially when you consider the other high-quality models that this company has released in recent years.
Cons
As is the case with any type of purchase – regardless of its quality or performance – there are some disadvantages that you should also take into consideration before you purchase this ZTM. Each of those cons is outlined below.
- The rear tires are 18″ which may pose a problem for storage and use: If you are in need of a mower with either smaller or bigger tires (depending on the size of your storage space or overall landscaping area), this may be viewed as a disadvantage.
- There are plastic parts within the underside of the seat: The underside of the seat and other key areas of the mower are made of plastic, which means that it may need maintenance and repair over time.
- An added amount of prying is necessary during assembly: When it comes to the overall crate, there may be some additional prying needed. However, the crating is solid during the shipping process and will keep the mower protected.

This is the perfect mower for large, relatively flat grassy areas. When compared with other mowers of its type, this one might not come with all of the features, but when you compare commercial zero turn mowers prices, this one can’t be beat.
While the lower price point means that there might be some features you won’t get with the P46ZX, there’s no question that you’re getting an excellent value for your money. If your needs are basic and you’re on a budget, you can’t go wrong with the P46ZX.
Pros
Having a seat back that’s high enough to give you support is essential in making sure you stay comfortable while you mow.
There are a number of features that make this an excellent deal. In fact, there are certain features that you’d typically only find in higher-end mowers. Below is a list of some of the key features that you’ll get with the P46ZX.
- An excellent price: We shouldn’t harp on the price too much. After all, as the saying goes, you get what you pay for. However, because of everything included with the P46ZX, the price is definitely an excellent selling point. Don’t let the affordable price fool you, however; this is definitely a quality product.
- 22 horsepower Briggs and Stratton engine: This engine gives you power in a compact design. The engine will allow you to cover ground quickly and easily, which makes this mower absolutely perfect for large areas. Briggs and Stratton is also a name that’s known and trusted, so you know you’re getting quality.
- 6 position adjustable cutting height: Different areas need a different cut, and this mower allows you to cut anywhere from 1. 5 inches to 4 inches. This allows you to always adjust the height of the grass for any job, which is definitely a benefit when using a mower like this.
- High back seat: Having a seat back that’s high enough to give you support is essential in making sure you stay comfortable while you mow. With a 15 inch high back seat, this mower provides you with excellent comfort even when you’re on it for long periods of time.
- 46 inch RZ reinforced deck: Not only is the deck reinforced for maximum durability, but it also includes a 10 year warranty. The guaranteed durability of this deck means that you’re getting a super value for your buck. You never have to worry about your deck becoming damaged.
- Caster wheels with a welded frame: The deck isn’t the only thing that’s durable about this model. It comes equipped with caster wheels and a welded frame, which means the thing is built tough and should last you a very long time. Definitely quality craftsmanship.
Cons
Every mower not only comes with its pros, but also its cons. While the price might be right, there might be some jobs that this mower just isn’t quite equipped to handle. Here’s a list of some of the down sides when it comes to this mower.
- It’s a bit heavy: Compared to other mowers of its type, 750 pounds is a little bit heavy. While the engine is fully capable of pulling such a weight, this weight might make it difficult to move the mower when it’s not gassed up.
- Better for home use than commercial use: This model can be used for commercial jobs, but because it is a base model, it’s generally better for home use. You’re likely going to struggle a little bit with commercial jobs in comparison with more expensive mowers.
- Might slide when on hills: The mower is known to slide a little bit sideways when on a hilly surface, and the weight causes it to accelerate when moving downhill. This can be extremely frustrating when working on certain surfaces, and this mower ought to be avoided if that’s how you’re planning on using it.

Overall, this is a great machine for commercial jobs or even large residential jobs. It combines comfort, strength, and agility into one solid machine with limited failings.
Pros
This best zero turn mower is fast, with top speeds reaching seven miles per hour when going forwards.
When researching commercial quality mowers, you’ll find this Troy-Bilt XP is highly praised in many consumer reports on zero turn mowers. What’s behind all of the acclaim? Here are just a few reasons why this ZTM gets top marks.
- Comfortable seat: The vinyl seat installed on this model is both wide enough and tall enough to provide comfort – without having to hunch over. It also has dual suspension springs to alleviate the jolting that comes with rougher landscapes.
- 60 inch cutting deck: The cutting deck is an extra-large 60 inches, which makes it perfect for large landscapes. With the wide cutting area, you’ll have to go back and forth less often, which can significantly decrease your mowing time.
- Eight height settings: The eight height settings offer something for everyone. You can opt to have a closely trimmed yard or leave an inch if that is what you prefer. You have the ability to change height settings for different parts of your yard, also.
- It’s fast: This best zero turn mower is fast, with top speeds reaching seven miles per hour when going forwards. This, combined with the wide cutting deck, is what allows this riding mower to make such quick work of your lawn mowing chore.
- Three year limited warranty: Troy-Bilt offers a three year limited warranty on this model. Among other things, it covers factory defects – such as parts going too quickly. This offers the extra assurance you need when making such a large purchase.
- Electric power take off: Also known as PTO, the electric power take off allows the blades to engage immediately. To set this feature, simply press a button. Note that it turns off when the mower is placed in reverse, which is a built-in safety feature.
Cons
What are the drawbacks to buying this Troy-Bilt ZTM? There aren’t many, but the following are worth taking note of. Although, with a bit of foreknowledge, most of these cons can be easily dealt with.
- The PTO shuts off in reverse: A built in safety feature is that the power take off turns off when the mower is put into reverse. This may not be a con for some, but it can be irritating if you forgot to reengage it.
- A lot of dust is thrown into the air: This is a byproduct of having such a powerful machine. Tons of dust is thrown into the air while mowing. You will want to wear goggles, and maybe even a face mask, when mowing. These tend to be good safety precautions anyways.
- Tires spin easy: This model could have better wheel traction. There are points when using it that the tires begin to spin, which can leave little nicks in your yard where the grass has been torn up. If you pay attention, however, you can stop most of the damage.

Buying Guide
Mower deck size
Zero turn mowers come in many different deck sizes. One factor you should take into account when choosing a ZTR deck size is how big of an area you need to mow. The larger the area, the bigger deck you will want to use since you will be able to cut a larger area of grass at a time.
If you are cutting less than an acre, a 42″ deck will work fine. For two acres, a 44″ deck will do the job. For areas larger than 2 acres, you may want to go with a bigger deck that is around 48″ to 61″. For a huge, flat piece of land, you may even want to use a massive 72″ deck.
Different classes of ZTRs
How often you need to mow makes a big difference in what class of ZTR you purchase. Economy mowers are often only rated for a maximum one cut a week, meaning the parts that they are made from are not sturdy enough to handle frequent, long-term use.
On the other hand, commercial or industrial zero turns can easily cut grass for 40+ hours a week, making these an excellent choice for lawn businesses. If you need to mow a few times a week, an estate/midgrade ZTR will do the job.
Mower speed vs. cutting time
If you need to mow a yard in a hurry, say if you run a business or you are limited on time, then you will need to consider how fast a mower will go. The top speed of the mower does not necessarily mean that’s how quickly it can cut, though.
Some mowers may go up to 8 mph, yet only cut effectively at 4 mph. If you have to make multiple passes to get an evenly cut lawn, then you are not going to save time.
Handling on steep slopes
A common question is “are zero turn mowers good on slopes?” The answer is: it depends on the slope. The best zero turn mowers for hills are ones with wide decks. ZTRs with a deck smaller than 42″ are not recommended for mowing on steep slopes. The smaller the mower, the less traction it will have which can cause the mower to slide and tear up your grass.
ZTRs are not good for mowing slopes that are greater than 10 degrees. They can become way too unstable, and you may risk harm to your mower, your lawn, and yourself. Since smaller ZTRs are top-heavy, they can even roll over if they are used a steep hill. Keep your old gas or electric lawn mower to do the slopes.
Towing equipment
Although some models come with a hitch, they are not designed to pull heavy loads like lawn tractors are. Hauling a load that is too heavy will ruin the transmission, which can cost a pretty penny to repair.
If you need to pull small things like a yard cart or a dethatcher, you’re in the clear. However, they are certainly not designed to pull a 500 lb. load or a heavy lawn roller. Even the best commercial zero turn mowers on the market are not created for this purpose.
Different types of steering
There are four types of steering used in ZTRs: lap-bar, steering wheel, stand-on, and joystick. Lap-bar steering is the most common. While this takes a little while to get the hang of, most people prefer lap-bar steering zero turn mowers.
Steering wheel ZTRs drive much like your car—using your feet to control the speed rather than your arms. Standing ZTRs use two levers—these are most often used for industrial mowing. Joystick ZTRs use a joystick that looks like an over-sized, videogame-style joystick.
Mowing different landscapes
Zero turn mowers are easy and efficient to use on lawns, but keep in mind that they are not made to mow down tall or thick weeds. They are also not designed to handle fields, pastures, paddocks, or thick stalks on weeds.
If the grass in your yard is more than a foot tall, you should mow it to under six inches before using a ZTR. Tall grass will damage your mower’s deck spindle, bearings, tires, and belts. Even heavy duty models are not made to withstand landscapes overtaken by large weeds and tall grass.
Width of the ZTR
Although zero turn mowers with broader deck sizes have the advantage of mowing a more extensive area at once, they also come with a couple drawbacks. First, larger ZTRs are a little more challenging to get into tight spots like around small gardens or rocks.
Second, the width of the mower may make it impossible to get through smaller gates and between trees. If you keep the mower in your garage or shed, make sure you measure out the width first to make sure it will fit.
Good for edging, not drop-offs
The maneuverability of ZTRs make them perfect for edging. You can get around sharp corners without a problem. However, they are not good for mowing near the edge of a lake, pond or drop-off. Even robotic lawn mowers cannot be used on that type of terrain.
Although it’s tempting to get a close cut, mowing too close to the edge of a body of water or on a steep cliff can be deadly. Corroded earth near a drop-off can collapse with the weight of a ZTR leaving you and your mower in a lake, pond, or free-falling.
Flat vs. rugged landscapes
ZTRs can handle small dips and bumps with no problem. However, smaller models will have a tough time handling really rugged land. The best zero turn mower for rough terrain will be the one that is large and heavy.
Additionally, economy models tend to be lighter, smaller, and less durable. So any rough terrain may make for a bumpy ride or even cause damage to the mower’s components. It is worth considering either a larger model or a mid-grade ZTR for land that isn’t completely flat.
How much horsepower
The higher the grade, the higher the horsepower. The size of the engine matters for two reasons: speed and power. As we talked about before, the faster your ZTR, the quicker the job. But how powerful a zero turn mower is, is just as important as how quick it is.
If you have thick grass like Bermuda or St. Augustine, you will want a higher horsepower engine. Thick grass will force low horsepower ZTRs to mow much slower. Moreover, excessive strain put on a smaller engine can lead to extra wear and tear and a shorter mower lifespan.
Tires matter for traction
The type of tires that come on ZTRs matters a lot. Wide tires will give you more traction and spread the weight of the mower across more area, leaving your lawn in better shape.
Small, thin tires can cause the zero turn lawn mower to dig into the ground and leave behind tire marks and tear up the grass. Whether you’re in the market for an economy-grade model or you’re looking for an estate-grade ZTR, always take a good look at the tires.
Don’t ignore comfort
If you spend only an hour or two mowing each week, comfort may not be a concern. But if you spend 40+ hours every week mowing, you are going to want the smoothest riding zero turn mower you can find.
Some models will feel like you’re cruising in a Benz. Others will feel like a go-cart. Many ZTRs have comfortable seats with a back for support, and some just have simple hard plastic seats. As a rule of thumb, as you move up in weight, size, price, and grade, ZTRs get more comfortable.
Check the return policy
With so many zero turn mowers available on the market, it’s hard to know which one is the best until you try it out. For this reason, always check the return policy and make sure you can return it if you need to.
With such an investment, the last thing you want is not to have the freedom to return. If the machine doesn’t work exactly how it’s supposed to, you should be able to get your money back. Many companies offer a 15-90 day return policy, but check the fine print to make sure there’s not a catch.
Balance quality and price
The higher the grade, the better the mower, but that doesn’t mean you need the highest grade ZTR. Keep in mind the size of your property. If you have a yard that’s less than an acre, you probably don’t need the best zero turn mower on the market. But if you mow day-in-day-out, you may want the best commercial grade zero turn mower available.
Buying a cheaply made mower can make things expensive in the long run. As the saying goes; buy cheap, buy twice. The best zero turn mower will perfectly balance quality and price.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a zero turn mower?
A zero turn radius mower (ZTR) is a mower that can turn around within a zero-degree turn radius or within zero inches. Unlike cars and traditional tractor-style mowers, ZTRs can turn completely around without needing lots of space. In other words, no more time-consuming three-point turns.
For a long time, ZTRs were only used by professional landscapers. But consumer ZTR models have been introduced into the market bringing this technology to homeowners and small business owners.
Is it difficult to drive a zero turn mower?
There are several different types of steering in ZTRs: lap-bar, steering wheel, joystick, and standing. The steering wheel version will be much like a car, so there’s not much of a learning curve there.
The most common version is the lap-bar, which will take a little bit of learning. After a mow or two, you’ll have the lap-bar controls down pat. If you’ve ever played a classic video game, using the joystick control should come naturally.
How do lap-bars work?
The lap-bars are reasonably easy to use. If you move the right bar forward, the right side motor will move forward. If you move the right bar backward, the right side will move back. The same goes for the left wheels. If you push both bars forward at the same time, the ZTR will move straight ahead.
The right and the left motors work independently of each other. This is what gives the mower its zero turn radius.
Will a zero turn mower save time on mowing?
Many people have found that zero turn mowers cut mowing time in half. A traditional tractor mower requires a lot of time-consuming three-point turns and circling to cut every patch of grass, especially around trees and flower beds.
ZTRs allow you to turn around quickly and easily, so you don’t have to worry about circling back around to cut a small patch you missed. This saves a lot of time.
Why do zero turn mowers usually cost more than lawn tractors?
The main reason why zero turn mowers cost more than traditional lawn tractors is that they have two hydrostatic transmissions rather than one.
They also tend to have larger decks, bigger engines, and tougher frames. Overall, they have more steel in the structure compared to traditional riding lawn mowers. Although they may be more costly upfront, in the long run, you save a lot of money since they often outlast and outperform traditional mowers. Since ZTRs mow quicker, you save plenty on gas too. Regardless of the price, lawn professionals still choose zero turn mowers over any other kind including lawn tractors.
