- Burton snowboards only: EST bindings are seriously only made for Burton snowboards. This isn’t a surprise or new info, but when snowboard bindings installation is this easy and the bindings are this good, it’s truly unfortunate they are not compatible with any other boards.
- Stuck in the middle: 3 sizes are available that cover a wide range of boot sizes (size 6 to 10+), but if your size falls right in the middle of a range, expect problems. Because the heelcup is not adjustable like other board bindings, you might have to move the binding forward. It may feel too weird and less enjoyable.
- Irritating ankle strap: This is a great binding, but sometimes the ankle strap can be a minor annoyance. As you’re trying to strap in, it may get in your way from time to time. Just make sure you are on flat ground when strapping that boot on.

Flex Rating
This can be one the trickier aspects to figure out. Though manufacturers provide a number ranging between 1 and 10, 1 being the softest and 10 the stiffest, there is no industry standard. Generally, you can break flex ratings into four categories: soft, medium, stiff and very stiff.
As a rule of thumb, the higher the ability level, the stiffer the binding will be. The best snowboard bindings for beginners have the softest flex. For best results (and fun) on the mountains, the flex of your board, boots and bindings should all match.
Park / Freestyle

They tend to be heavier, less responsive and are not the best powder snowboard bindings as it’s nearly impossible to get on in deep powder. Toe Cap Straps
This strap wraps over the toe box and provides a great deal of comfort as well as stability in your stance. It pushes the boot back further into the binding for better fit and doesn’t cause pressure spots that you feel through your ski socks, unlike older strap designs.
A nice added benefit is the improved board’s responsiveness. Toe caps give your feet better placement in the heel cup, transferring power from your toes to the board faster.
Ankle Strap
This larger strap tightly wraps above the ankle; it secures the ankle and the top part of the foot that keeps your boot in position. It may not seem as complex and high tech as other binding components, but it is critical for providing response and power. Without it, the bindings would not work.

Baseplate
Playing liaison between the bindings and board, energy from the rider is transferred to the board through the baseplate. Depending on the material used, it will have various degrees of strength and flexibility combinations. High-end bindings will have stronger baseplate materials. Stronger baseplates heighten a board’s flexibility, energy transference and durability.
Reducing the thickness of the baseplate has been the recent trend in snowboarding bindings. The thought is that by reducing its overall size, the bindings and snowboard can have more direct contact with each other, increasing energy and decreasing the “dead” areas where material had been too thick.
Cushioning
Cushioned support can be found in one of two places: beneath the baseplate or on top, overlaying the baseplate. By helping to reduce the bindings, the cushion absorbs more of the vibration and provides the rider with runs that are smoother and steadier.
Personal preference will dictate what is right for you. Aggressive riders (and more aggressive freestyler riders) may choose less cushion to have an extra feel of the board and ground. Freestyle/park riders may be more concerned about their knees and consider opting for more under-foot cushioning to better absorb landing impact.
Heelcup
As the name implies, this section of the binding wraps around your boot and cups the heel. Until recently, the heelcup was always made of the baseplate’s material, but companies have started to progress heelcup technology.
Heelcups can now be found crafted out of aluminum, making them stronger and more durable. To make the binding even lighter, some brands have started to offer machine cored heelcups. This is a process that reduces its weight further.
Disc Mounting
Discs can be arranged horizontally or vertically, giving you a lot of different stance options. There is the 2×4 (the most common), 4×4 and 3D hole pattern.
Out of all the different snowboard binding hole patterns, the 2×4 and the 4×4 are the most compatible and the most similar. The 3D hole pattern is compatible with most hole patterns, but stance options are more restricted. When attaching your bindings to your board, you’ll want to make sure discs are compatible.
EST Mounting
This specialized system uses channels that run along the snowboard at the inserts and has the advantage of virtually limitless stance options and minimal dead-zone contact with the board (so the board can flex more naturally without the bindings getting in the way).
Unfortunately, compatibility with other bindings is more difficult. Some brands offer universal discs which allow compatibility with all mounting systems. For others, special discs are needed. Most brands do seem to make these but there is the extra cost of getting the converter disc.
Snowboard Bindings Sizing & Fit
Typically available in small, medium, and large, getting bindings that correctly match your style, boot and board is non-negotiable. It cannot be said enough.
With the straps fastened, the ratchet should lay half-way through the track and your foot should fit cozily into the binding. Depending on how often you plan on hitting the slopes, renting may be an option (though we don’t recommend it). It makes sense to get a decent pair of bindings that match your riding style and ability if you are planning on buying a snowboard.
How do I make my bindings last a long time?
The great thing about bindings is that they last for a long time with minimal wear and tear. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t look after them, they keep you and your board connected, after all.
Make sure you replace damaged straps when you notice it. Nothing is worse than that feeling of your feet slipping out when you’re in the air! It’s also common for them to loosen over time. Use a snowboard tool to tighten the screws in the baseplate.
What happens if my bindings break?
Typically, it shouldn’t be a problem if your bindings break. Many companies offer warranties and smaller wear and tear parts like sliders, tongues or buckles will often be replaced.
If you are past the warranty date, it is fairly easy to find many other companies that can fix them good as new. Repair kits can also be purchased online.
Can I use bindings from my skis to snowboard?
Ski bindings will not attach to a snowboard any better than snowboard bindings would be functional on all-mountain skis. This is due to a variety of major design differences. You also won’t be able to use ski boots for the same reason.
For the most part, the only ski accessories that may be useful while snowboarding are a ski backpack, ski gloves, ski jacket and ski pants. Be aware that the pants and jacket may be more restrictive of your movements than snowboarding gear would be.
Will rented bindings hurt if I’m on my feet all day?
The thing about renting any equipment is that it all tends to be “one size fits all”. Generic sizing is fine for a ski bag or a ski boots bag, but bindings are rather crucial. Plus, rental bindings are used heavily and it’s highly advised you closely look them over for weaknesses.
Rentals should not hurt but if you encounter discomfort, the rental shop will have someone to help you make necessary adjustments, although it will not fit as good as your own customized shoe. Have some warm winter boots on hand if you need to take a break.
